1-31-12

Wow, I've been at this a whole month now! And I only missed like two days...

Anyways, more wandering samurai-sorcerer:

I'm getting the clothes down first, then the armor, then the doo-dads.

1-30-12

Still plugging away at the wandering samurai-sorcerer:

Working on a new process: I took the light grey sketch, threw some browns on top on a Multiply layer, then worked in highs and lows on top. I'm pretty pleased with the results so far.

1-29-12

It is long since past the time when we need to continue DRAGONTIME:

I'm giving Temeraire another go, changing around the proportions and putting the harness into the image from the get-go.

1-28-12

Saw this week's character challenge over at CGHub, and it tickled my fancy, so here goes:

Sort of going for Yojimbo's sorcerer grandpa.

1-27-12

Alright, back again. Here's the finished Capt. Lawrence:

Thursday, January 26, 2012

1-26-12

Ugh. Feet hurt from work all day. Me draw chubby Mobile Infantry power-armor.

He have proportion like giant baby.

1-25-12

I'm taking a break from DRAGONTIME to concept out the caption of Temeraire, William Laurence:

That dealie in his hand is one of the clips for attaching to the dragon's harness. I thought they should be like ice-climbing picks, because the idea of pseudo-ice climbing up a dragon that's flying around is so bad-ass I might cry.

DRAGONTIME CONTINUES APACE:

Monday, January 23, 2012

1-23-12

What time is it? DRAGONTIME

These are based off of the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik, which is the Napoleonic Wars, but with dragons. Top is Temeraire, the main dragon, bottom is Maximus, another heavyweight dragon in Temeraire's squadron.

Ugh missed a day completely. And not like last time: I woke up hungover and had to jet to work, so for the first time in 2012, I did not draw anything. Which sucks. I spent today watching the Niner's game and running various errands, so I was only able to scribble around in my tiny sketchbook a little bit:

A little more Mobile Infantry, some Ninja Turtles, some Temeraire, just quick things that popped into my head today.

So, it's mythical beast week, I guess:

Battle Centaur, fuck yeah.

Happy Birfday to me! Here's a murdermaid:

1-18-12

So I finished Mikey:

Which also means I am finished with all four Ninja Turtles!

I was thinking of doing a quick and coloring in of the Bebop and Rocksteady sketch I posted a few days ago next.

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

1-17-12

Finished Raphael:

and started on Michelangelo:

Monday, January 16, 2012

1-16-12

I got Raphael to like 90%

All I have to do is clean up a bit and put in the terrifying neck spikes, and it's on to Michelangelo!

Sunday, January 15, 2012

1-14-12 and also 1-15-12

So, I missed a day. I mean, I missed a post. I drew something, I just didn't get around to posting it. Still, no excuses. I have cut off my left pinkie finger as a sign of contrition.

Now that the bleeding has stopped, here's some more exploration into the Mobile Infantry:

And I also did some sketches of that bumbling duo that the Ninja Turtles love to beat like the Washington Generals, Bebop and Rocksteady:

1-13-12

Just squeaked in!

Back to the Mobile Infantry for a bit. Also scanned this out of the sketchbook, instead of going digital.

1-12-12

Still chugging away at Raph:

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

1-11-12

So I finished up Donatello. Turns out that tortoises have basically the same pattern on the fron of their shells as the back. Also scary-looking shoulder scales.

I also started on Raphael. I'm basing him off of am alligator snapping-turtle. Which, if you didn't know, are pretty much just straight up dinosaurs.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

1-10-12

Didn't get as far on Don as I wanted:

Have I mentioned yet how freaky-looking turtles are?

Monday, January 9, 2012

1-9-12

Finished Leonardo:

Started on Donatello:

My plan is to base each Turtle off of a different kind of real life turtle. Furthermore, I'm trying to match the Turtle's personalities to a real turtle. So since Don is the team scientist and used the weapon with the most reach, it made sense to me that he would be a tortoise, which have stockier limbs.

I'm planning on making Raphael a scary-assed snapping turtle, and Mikey will be some kind of shiny, smooth river turtle/surfer stoner.

Quick note on the blog, I have now posted more times in the last nine days than I did all last year!

Sunday, January 8, 2012

1-8-12

I debated whether or not it's cheating for me to work on pieces for consecutive days, but it's my blog, I make the rules:

More turtle, more problems. Turtles are actually really weird creatures, and I plan to do at least one more after Leonardo.

1-7-12

I have tread these ninja-infested waters before, but there is something about using my current crop of tools to continue making Nina Turtle fan art more than twenty years after my earliest attempts that just tickles me pink.

Some notes on process: I got the color layer down much faster than I normally do, and once it was down, I used Levels and Hue/Saturation almost immediately to tweak things, rather than waiting until posting time. It helped give me the color for those shadows on his face and arm which I don't think I would have gone to on my own.

Friday, January 6, 2012

1-6-12

I switched things up today and drew a weapon:

Knives in perspective are tricky because they're made up of so few simple shapes that if anything is off the whole thing looks wonky. I should have did some work beforehand with perspective guides, but I'm still largely pleased with the final result.

This whole post something everyday thing is meant primarily to be a learning experience, and I think that everyday so far has taught me something.

Thursday, January 5, 2012

1-5-12

I put a bit more into today's piece than yesterday's:

Cyborgs are always awesome.

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

1-4-12

I wasn't sure how much time I'd have later, so I hopped over to Posemaniacs.com and did a quick figure drawing session.

I think this will be my go-to when I don't have the time for something more focused.

1-3-12

2012 has started out all Altered Carbon, all the time. Here's Takeshi Kovacs, sleeved in Elias Ryker:

I have drawn this guy at least a half-dozen times now, and this one is far and away my favorite. It's comforting that I'm improving, and that all I have to do is look back on images that are a few years old and see how far I've come. Hopefully this project will encapsulate that feeling as well.

Monday, January 2, 2012

1-2-12

Alright, staying strong on day 2!

Not quite as polished as I'd like, but the design is solid and has an interesting silhouette.

Tomorrow should probably be in color, and not a picture of a gun.

Sunday, January 1, 2012

1-1-12

My main New Years Resolution is to draw and post something every single day. Not necessarily a masterpiece, but I've got to put stylus to tablet for a bit and then post it. So here's the first in the 365-part series:

The top gun started as just a random scribble, then I figured I might as well keep working on a project I've been kicking around for a few years, so it turned into guns from Altered Carbon.

See you tomorrow!
